A Romantic Somerset Escape: Lily & James’s Wedding at Brympton House
If you were to close your eyes and imagine the quintessential English country wedding, you would probably picture Brympton House. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Somerset, just outside Yeovil, this venue is a photographer’s playground.
I recently had the absolute pleasure of capturing Lily and James’s wedding here, and to say it was a "good day" would be a massive understatement. It was one of those days where the light was perfect, the laughter was loud, and the love was palpable.
A Venue Steeped in History
Before we get to the party, let’s talk about where we were. For couples searching for a historic wedding venue in Somerset, Brympton House is hard to beat. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful houses in England. You'll see in the images below.
The property has a fascinating history dating back to the 13th century. Originally owned by the d'Evercy family for over 200 years, the estate evolved through the hands of the Sydenham family, who added the stunning Elizabethan frontage that makes for such an epic backdrop in wedding photos today.
From the medieval Great Hall to the 33 acres of immaculate parkland, every corner of this Grade I listed manor tells a story. But what I love most is that despite its grandeur, it doesn’t feel stuffy. It feels like a home, albeit a very, very large one with a much better garden than mine!
Lily & James: Laid-Back Local Love
Enter Lily and James. This lovely couple are locals to the area, so choosing a venue that reflected the beauty of their home county was a no-brainer.
Sometimes, when you work at a venue as grand as Brympton, you worry the couple might feel the pressure to be overly formal. Not these two. Lily and James were the definition of "laid-back luxe." There were no "bridezilla" moments here, unless you count the fierce determination to get everyone on the dance floor later in the night!
Their priority was simple: good food, great wine, and a relaxed atmosphere where their families could mingle without endless formalities. It makes my job as a Brympton House wedding photographer infinitely easier when the couple is this chilled out. We spent the portrait session wandering the grounds, laughing, and dodging the occasional over-enthusiastic pheasant.
The Photography Experience
Shooting at Brympton is a dream because the light changes so beautifully throughout the day. We utilized the famous Terrace for the drinks reception and the breathtaking front room. Then the dining room for the wedding breakfast.
For future couples looking at this venue: The architecture does the heavy lifting. My goal was simply to capture Lily and James enjoying it. Whether it was a stolen kiss in the walled garden or the jovial toasts in the evening, the photos reflect a day that was effortless and joyful. We did get a little spot of rain and wind just before the dancing. I'm sure you'll enjoy these photos.
If you are planning your own wedding at Brympton House and want photography that focuses on real unstated moments rather than stiff poses, I’d love to chat.
